Who is an Optometrist?
An optometrist ( 眼科視光師 ) is defined by the World Council of Optometry (a member of the World Health Organisation) as follows:
-
Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered) and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction (the checking of refractive error of the eye) and dispensing, detection / diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.
-
While most optometrists practice in communities and serve the general public, some optometrists specialise in work with the elderly, children, or partially sighted persons who need specialised visual devices. Others develop and implement ways to protect workers’ eyes from on-the-job strain or injury, and specialise in contact lenses, sports vision, or vision therapy.
-
In Malaysia, all optometrists are University educated and equipped with proper clinical skill. They are the primary eye care provider regulated by the Malaysian Optical Council within the Ministry of Health.
