THE ROLE OF OCCUPATIONAL OPTOMETRIST IN OESH

Occupational Optometrist addresses the vision and the eyes of the workers under the working environment. This branch of optometry does not only cover the prevention of eye injuries at work, but also examines the visual requirements and demands relating to the job functions. It is an important aspect for an organisation when addressing the eye health and eye safety of the workforce.

The Roles of Occupational Optometrist in OESH Include:

  1. Taking care the general eye health and visual status of the workforce.

  2. Conducts periodic Professional Occupational Eye Examinations to determine the visual level and status of the workforce.

  3. Keeping records and history of the visual level of the workers.

  4. Assess and determine the visual demands of various job functions and provide the necessary prescription and professional recommendations.

  5. Establish Job Vision Standards for various job functions together with the OSH Department of an organization

  6. Advise on the setting up and implementation of eye safety policy for the company.

  7. Conduct in-house training, workshops and seminars to educate the workforce on the importance of eye safety and protective eye wear.

  8. Advise and prescribe the correct eye protection (primary or secondary, plano or prescriptive) for the workforce.
